Words-Worth: Carol Stocks

English Translations with Style and Expertise

Carol Stocks has been a freelance translator since 1999. She specialises in environment and development policy, education and social policy, labour and health policy. In her Corporate Communications work, she translates a broad range of topics, including compliance, corporate responsibility, human resources management and logistics – both for internal and external use.

A native of Liverpool and resident in Bonn since 1984, Carol served eight years in the Women’s Royal Air Force at bases near London and at NATO headquarters in Germany and Denmark, where she received intensive German and Danish language training. After moving to Bonn, Carol gathered further translation-related experience as a Marketing Assistant at the Australian Trade Department, as an Administrative Assistant at the Institute for European Environmental Policy (the forerunner of the Wuppertal Institut) and as a Contract Specialist in Procurement at the US Embassy. In her twelve years’ service with the US Embassy, she served for two years as an elected member and later as Chair of the Employee’s Executive Council.

After setting up as a freelance translator when the seat of German government moved to Berlin, Carol dedicated much of her free time to studying for her BSc in Human Geography with the Open University, attaining the OU Certificate in Social Sciences and the OU Diploma in Environment and Development. Alongside her freelance work, she worked for five years as an editor and translator for internal communications at Deutsche Post DHL Group.

In her free time, Carol dances Argentine Tango and enjoys travelling, often combining the two. She is also a keen photographer and dabbles in interior design. Carol’s second foreign language is Danish and she is currently learning Spanish.
